The School of Physics and
Astronomy
at the University of St Andrews
Astronomers at St Andrews have made major contributions
to the study of planets around stars other than our sun. Research is also carried
out in the fields of magnetism and superconductivity, millimetre waves, photonics,
semiconductor physics, and theoretical physics.
In the first year
teaching lab two students are exploring the concepts of X-ray diffraction in solids
through the use of a scaled-up model that uses microwaves and spheres. Dr Steve Lee
uses his experience in solid-state research to help guide the students. The first
year teaching laboratories are closely linked with the lecture courses to allow the
students to explore ideas covered in the lectures.
