Laser physics

Ti:sapphire laser pumped by argon ion laserCommercial and home-built lasers are used and developed here. A wide range of associated diagnostic equipment is in use. Zoe Penman is shown using a Spectra Physics argon ion laser to power a Titanium sapphire laser that she and her co-workers have constructed to produce ultrashort pulses of laser radiation. The infra-red viewer that she is using allows her to see the infra red light that is produced.

PIC entranceAs well as the laser-related research, the School has set up a Photonics Innovation Centre (PIC), which aims to strengthen the links between the School's work and end-users.  Members of the PIC team are pictured outside the main entrance of this recently developed facility.
