Liquid helium

old helium liquifierThe generation and use of liquid helium at St Andrews has a long history in St Andrews, due to Prof. J F Allen's pioneering work here from 1947. The helium liquifier constructed in-house around that time is on display outside theatre C.  We now use a commercially obtained liquifier.  The helium gas that boils off from the various cryostats in the building is collected and piped back to storage underneath the new machine, before it is re-liquified.
