School of Physics & Astronomy

Special  Saturday Visits

Students working together in the group study area in the SchoolThe School will run a special event for potential students on one Saturday per session.  The next Saturday Visit is planned for 25 February 2012.  These events take place mostly in this School, and run from about 11.15 am to about 5 pm.  To arrange a visit of this type, please contact us by one of the means listed in our "contact details" page.   It is NOT possible to take part in this visit simply by turning up; advance booking is required.

Visitors are asked to come to the School of Physics and Astronomy between 10.30 and 11.00 am.  We provide travel suggestions.  Visitors will be greeted at the main entrance foyer of the School.

The activities during the day are likely to consist of:-

  • General talk on studying at St Andrews
  • Lunch at a Hall of Residence and tour there
  • Visit to the University Sports Centre
  • Presentation on Career prospects for St Andrews graduates
  • Presentation on Physics and Astrophysics at St Andrews
  • Presentation on Astronomy Teaching and Research
  • Tour of the School and the University Observatory
  • Student using the Meade telescope at the University ObservatoryInteraction with current students
  • Opportunities to talk with teaching staff
  • Tour of the town and University

Thus there is a signficant overlap in the activities offered in the Wednesday visiting days and the Saturday day. There is more time during the Saturday event to discuss aspects of study of physics and astronomy here, though there is less (near zero) opportunity to visit other academic schools.

As time passes, this Saturday event has become dominated by visitors who have applied for a place later in the year, ie a post-application visiting day.

Prospective visitors may also wish to consider coming on one of the University's Wednesday visiting days, during which they may spend up to a couple of hours in the School.
