M Squared Lasers

M2 LogoThe group is delighted to be working with M Squared Lasers who are currently marketing and developing two new products based on our intra cavity OPO systems. The first system, named "Firefly-IR" (pictured right) is a compact, widely tunable, pulsed mid-infrared laser source offering >100mW of output in the ~2.5 to 4.5 micron wavelength range. The second system, "Firefly-THz", capitalizes on our THz parametric generation work, offering a compact and simple THz source operating in the 1 to 3 THz band and based on the same proven intracavity pumping approach as the mid-IR system. More information on these systems can be found on the M Squared Lasers website:

Photonics Innovation Centre

The group has strong links with the School's Photonics Innovation Centre (PIC). PIC is a bridge between research and industry, developing promising research-lab devices into more advanced prototypes that are suitable candidates for commercial funding and development. The centre also fosters links with industrial partners working in the optics and photonics community.

The Nonlinear Optics group is currently working in partnership with PIC to develop an infrared source for dental applications. This development is a collaborative effort by several companies and is supported by the DTI.

PIC objectives
Promoting the further development of research 'breakthroughs' by enabling prototype devices to be designed, manufactured, characterised and fully tested;
Promoting enhanced opportunity for the assessment and development of prototype devices in new applications;
Facilitating a more rapid take-up of new devices by providing 'test-drive' opportunities;
Nurturing and encouraging potential spin-out companies by offering pseudo-incubator unit facilities;
Enabling the more widespread use of novel prototype devices within the Photonics Research Groups in St Andrews for the promotion of fundamental and applied research;
Enhancing the training of post-graduate and post-doctoral Research Fellows through working in close collaboration with industry;
