Nightline is a listening and information service operated by students for students of the University of St Andrews. A male and a female Nightliner are available by phone and by email from 8pm to 7am every night that all Halls of Residence are open. They’re there to provide a confidential, anonymous, and non-judgmental ear for students who need someone to talk to.
Callers and emailers can get in touch to talk about anything and everything. Things that people may contact Nightline to discuss include academic stress, depression, loneliness, self-harm, discrimination, eating disorders, sexual abuse, worries about a friend, bereavement, relationships, sexuality, housing concerns, pregnancy, difficulties with flatmates, alcohol and drugs, family problems, suicide, disability, rape, bullying, debt... No subject is too big or too small; if it’s on your mind, then Nightline is there to listen. Our volunteers won’t tell you what to do or offer advice, but they will actively listen and try to help you to talk things through on your own terms and in your own time.
In addition to providing our listening service Nightline volunteers are also on hand to try to answer any information requests you may have. Whether you’re after emergency contraception, the location of an obscure exam venue, or are looking for a taxi number or cinema listings, Nightline volunteers have access to a wide database of information and are there to help throughout the night.
All listening volunteers act in accordance with our five principles at all times:
- Confidential – all contacts to Nightline are dealt with in complete confidence; we will not divulge information about calls or emails to anyone outside the organisation.
- Anonymous – we will make no effort to find out who you are, and will not ask you for any identifying information. Similarly, our listening volunteers themselves remain anonymous, both to callers and emailers and to the wider student community.
- Non-judgmental – Nightline is there to listen, not to criticise or make judgments about any of our callers and emailers. We accept and respect the views of anyone who gets in contact and will not judge anything that is said to us.
- Non-directive – we will not offer advice or advocate any particular course of action.
- Empathic – we will always help callers and emailers to explore their feelings in a supportive environment.
- - - - - Nightline is open every night that halls are open, 8pm-7am. Call at (01334 46) 2266 or by emailing nightline[at]st-andrews.ac.uk. |
