Entrance and Matriculation Process

Below are the 10 steps to be completed by entrant students, that is students who are matriculating (registering) at the University for the first time.

To do now

Once you have confirmed your acceptance of an offer from St Andrews, and satisfied any conditions of that offer (for example, passing any qualifications as stated in your offer), your application is passed on for processing.

Applications progress at different rates, so do not be too concerned if you haven't received your entrant email immediately.  You will receive the email from Registry in good time to allow you to complete all the necessary steps before matriculating in September 2012.

Adding st-andrews.ac.uk to your 'Safe Senders' list should ensure that your email does not go into your junk or spam folder.

  • Step 1 - Accommodation

Apply for accommodation if you have not already done so.  If you have any queries about accommodation, please contact Student Accommodation Services.

Students who are intending to commute daily to St Andrews rather than move into a Hall of residence, may find information on The Townsend Society of interest: Townsend Society Information (PDF, 75 KB)

  • Step 2 - Computer account

Open your computer account and activate your University email.

Your University email address is yourusername@st-andrews.ac.uk  Your username is included in the entrant email. You will set up your password when you open your account.

Once you have activated your email account you will be able to access it using SaintMail. You should check your University email frequently as official and academic communications will be sent to your University email address.

  • Step 3 - Pay your tuition and accommodation fees

Find out about fees...

Find out about funding....

Find out about opening a bank account...

A projected tuition fee is quoted in your entrant email regardless of who will be paying the fee, so if you know that someone else is paying (e.g. SAAS) then there will be an option to declare this in online matriculation (Step 8 below).

It is University policy not to send out invoices to students for payment of tuition and/or accommodation as all the fee information is published on our web pages.

  1. Changes in fees
The University Court reserves the right to make changes in fees without notice at any time before or after a candidate's admission.

  2. Liability for tuition fees
Entrants should note that it is a condition of registration with the University that they accept liability for their tuition fees.

  • Step 4 - Apply for your student ID card

Apply for your student ID (matriculation) card

This card is also your library borrowing card, and it is a swipe card which will give you access to University buildings, such as the open-access computer classrooms.

You will be able to collect your card during Orientation Week.

  • Step 5 - Students with a disability

Information for students with a disability or learning difficulty.

  • Step 6 - Health Centre

Please read the information and complete the form on the  page.  Please bring the completed form with you to Matriculation in Orientation Week.

To do before Matriculation

  • Step 7 - Module choices - it is important that this step is completed before your arrival in St Andrews

Before you arrive in St Andrews, you must enter your module choices online, which is known as Pre-Advising.

The Pre-Advising Guide for Entrants (Science) page and the Course Catalogue will help you understand which modules are available to you.  Each section of the Course Catalogue lays out programme requirements for each degree within that School or Department and then gives details for each module within that School or Department.  If you have any problems understanding the guidance notes on choosing your modules or the Course Catalogue, contact us with your query (curriculum@st-andrews.ac.uk or 01334 46 2351).

Once you have decided which modules you would like to take please enter your module choices online. Instructions on how to do this are on the Pre-Advising Guide for Entrants (Science) page.

Your module choices will be discussed more fully with your Adviser of Studies at Advising in Orientation Week before final decisions are made and your choices approved. Even when your module choices have been approved, it is usually possible to change your mind within the first week of the Semester.

  • Step 8 -  Online Matriculation (available from 28 August 2012) - start of registration process

This online process will guide you through the elements of registration required for you to become a St Andrews student.  An email will be sent to your University account with instructions on how to access the facility on or shortly after 28 August.  It is important therefore that you have created your email account as you will need this to access the online facility.

Please note that online matriculation should be completed by 12 noon on Friday 14 September 2012 at the latest.

To do once you have arrived in St Andrews

Orientation Week (8 - 16 September 2012)

Orientation Week is a series of events designed to welcome you and help you settle in at St Andrews.

Matriculation

Please ensure that you have completed online matriculation before Monday 10 September, where possible, and certainly by 12 noon on Friday 14 September.

The following two steps do not have to be completed in order, so you may go to Matriculation first, if you wish.

  • Step 9 - See your Adviser of Studies

All students are required to see Advisers before they start attending classes. Advisers will check and validate your module choices to ensure that they are appropriate.

Advising will take place during Orientation Week.

Please refer to the Advising and Matriculation webpage for further information regarding Advising appointments.  Your Schools or Departments will be arranging the details of your appointment.

  • Step 10 - Matriculation - complete registration (The Gateway - confirmed dates and times to follow)

Go on to the final step in the registration process, which is known as Matriculation. Please take with you

  • the means to pay your fees if you have not already done so online (cheque, credit card).
  • your completed Application to Register with the Health Centre and Medical Questionnaire. Staff from St Andrews Health Centre will be in attendance so that you can enrol with a local GP. All students who are not locally resident must enrol with a GP in St Andrews.
  • if you have entered the UK on a student visa you will need to bring your passport, visa/biometric card and Personal ID card (if you have one).

Matriculation brings the entrance process to an end. On completion of this process you will be a fully-matriculated student of the University and you will be ready to enrol in your classes.
