After Matriculation - Questions and Answers for Non-Graduating Students

Once you have matriculated, you should see your tutors or module co-ordinators for information on particular course requirements.

Please see the right person if you are having problems or have any queries - don't rely on second-hand information from your fellow students. Advice and support is there to help with a wide range of problems, ranging from financial difficulties to pastoral counselling.

I want to change my module choices

Any changes to your choice of course or modules must be approved by an AdviserChanges must be approved by the Monday of week two of each semester

If you wish to be advised into a 3- or 4000 level module you must see the Honours Adviser for that subject. If you wish to transfer into a 1 or 2000- level module you should either email the Pro Dean (Advising) of your Faculty or make an appointment to see them via the Advice and Support Centre.

I want to change my status to graduating to complete a degree in St Andrews

If International (non-EU) non-graduating students wish to stay for more than one year and graduate from St Andrews they should apply for graduating status. Details can be found on the transfer to graduating status webpage.

If you wish to change status you should complete the form as required and return it to the Advice and Support Centre or to Registry, along with an up-to-date transcript from any previous institution if you wish to transfer credits into your programme at St Andrews. A decision on applications will normally be made after the Semester 2 module results are known in early June.

EU students wishing to stay for more than one year and graduate from St Andrews should apply through UCAS.  Information is available from the Collaborations and Study Abroad team.

I wish to withdraw permanently from my course

If you wish to withdraw from your studies you will need to contact the appropriate Pro Dean (Undergraduate), and you must, save in exceptional circumstances, do this in person.  Appointments with the Pro Deans can be made through the Advice and Support Centre.

I have changed my name or address

On a regular basis, each student must check and update their personal details online via iSaint. To update your address, please use the address portlet on the 'Home' tab.

If you have officially changed your name we will need to see the documentation supporting this to update our records. You should bring this documentation (e.g. deed poll, updated passport, driver's licence) to the Advice and Support Centre along with your matriculation (ID) card.

I have missed classes or examinations

Attendance is a basic requirement for credit award, and failure to attend classes may result in you losing the right to be assessed in that module. Please ensure you are familiar with the Academic Alert regulations. Further information can be found in the student absence policy.

If you have missed classes, you must submit a self-certificate of absence as soon as possible and within 3 days of the first day of the absence. You can submit a self-certificate in eVision. Monitoring of absences will be undertaken and students who submit more than two self-certificates in a semester may be referred to the Academic Support Adviser at Student Services.

Verifiable documentary evidence may be required if the absence results in the inability to successfully complete the compulsory elements of the modules and/or a deferred assessment is required. The School involved will indicate to the student when further evidence is required in addition to existing self-certificates.

Absences from examinations

Absences from examinations should be reported to the Examinations Office (telephone +44 (0)1334 46 4100) as soon as you know you will be unable to sit an examination.

You should then self-certificate of absence. The School will let you know if further evidence is required in addition.

I want to get some financial advice

Expert help is available from the Advice and Support Centre.  All advice is confidential. Issues covered include pre-entry guidance on what your income and expenditure will be; student funding e.g. entitlements to loan/grants, applying to trust funds, entitlement to benefits, maximising your income; managing your money; banking facilities; debt problems; council tax problems.

The Service also manages and allocates the various funds for which the University is responsible.  These include the Discretionary Fund, Welfare Grant, University Loan Fund and a number of other Trust funds. Contact the Advice and Support Centre.

If you are having particular problems with instalment payments for tuition and/or accommodation fees, please contact the Advice and Support Centre to discuss drawing up a payment plan.
