After Matriculation Questions and Answers - Evening Degree Students
Once you have matriculated, you should contact your tutors, module co-ordinators or the Evening Degree Co-ordinator, Dr Nicky Haxell, for information on particular course requirements.
Please see the right person if you are having problems or have any queries - don't rely on second-hand information from your fellow students. Advice and support is there to help with a wide range of problems, ranging from financial difficulties to pastoral counselling.
I want to change my module choices
You cannot change your module choices without having this approved by your Adviser, Dr Nicky Haxell. Changes must be approved by the Monday of week two of each semester. Please do not start attending a module you have not been advised into without first agreeing this with Nicky.
I want to request transferred credit (recognition of prior learning)
Dr Nicky Haxell should be your first point of contact for requesting transferred credit in respect of study completed at other institutions. This will normally have been discussed at the application stage.
Decisions on transferred credit requests are made by the Pro Dean (Advising). If your request has been made at the application stage this will normally happen in October for Semester 1 entrants and February for Semester 2 entrants.
I want to change my Faculty to graduate with a BSc
All Evening Degree students are admitted to the Faculty of Arts and those who intend to graduate will do so with an MA General Degree. Evening Degree students who accumulate the majority of their credits in Science modules (modules codes with the prefix AS, BL, ES, GG, IS, MT or PS) may request a transfer to the Faculty of Science in order to graduate with a BSc General degree.
Initial requests should be made to Dr Nicky Haxell, who can then pass these to the Pro Deans (Advising) for approval and processing by Registry.
I want to become a full-time student
All Evening Degree students who wish to be considered for full-time study must apply through UCAS. The UCAS application deadline is 15 January in the year that you wish to enter the full-time course. All applications are considered carefully by a designated Admissions Officer.
Dr Nicky Haxell can give general advice, and referral to staff in Admissions; she can, if need be, act as referee. As an Adviser, she can also give advice about future module choices.
There are academic, administrative and financial considerations involved in a decision to become a full-time student, and on all these grounds it is best to start at a relatively early stage in the academic year if you are considering such a move. Further information can be found in the Evening Degree Students' Handbook, available via Moodle.
I want to withdraw or take a Leave of Absence from my studies
If there are medical or personal circumstances affecting your studies you may request to withdraw (take a Leave of Absence) temporarily or permanently from your course. Leaves of Absence can be requested for whole semesters or academic years.
Requests should be made via Dr Nicky Haxell, who will pass them to the appropriate Pro Dean (Undergraduate) for approval and processing.
I want to update my personal details
On a regular basis, each student must check and update their personal details online via iSaint. To update your address, please use the address portlet on the 'Home' tab.
If you have officially changed your name we will need to see the documentation supporting to update our records. You should bring this documentation (e.g. deed poll, updated passport, marriage certificate) to the Advice and Support Centre along with your matriculation (ID) card or email a scanned copy to Registry (Undergraduate) from your University email account.
I have missed classes
Attendance is a basic requirement for credit award, and failure to attend classes may result in you losing the right to be assessed in that module. Please ensure you are familiar with the Academic Alert regulations.
If you have missed classes, you must submit a self-certificate of absence as soon as possible. This facility is available through the University's eVision portal. It is important that you complete and return the form as soon as possible indicating the number of days of absence, the modules affected and the reason for your absence. Further information can be found in the student absence policy.
Verifiable documentary evidence may be required if the absence results in the inability to successfully complete the compulsory elements of the modules and/or a deferred assessment is required. The School will indicate to the student when further evidence is required in addition to existing self-certificates.
I want to get some financial advice
Expert help is available from the Advice and Support Centre. All advice is confidential. Issues covered include pre-entry guidance on what your income and expenditure will be; student funding e.g. entitlements to loan/grants, entitlement to benefits, maximising your income; managing your money; banking facilities; debt problems.
The Service also manages and allocates the various funds for which the University is responsible. These include the Discretionary Fund, Welfare Grant, University Loan Fund and a number of other Trust funds. Contact the Advice and Support Centre.
If you are having particular problems with payments for tuition fees, please contact the Advice and Support Centre.
Students with an outstanding debt to the University may not matriculate or graduate until their debt is cleared.
