John Burnside wins prestigious European award

University lecturer and writer Professor John Burnside has been awarded the 2009 laureate of the Prix Litteraire Europeen Madeleine Zepter.The prize is awarded annually to an author of an EU nation whose work has been translated into French or whose work was originally written in that language. Previous winners include Ian McEwan and John Banville. Un mensonge sur mon pere is the translation of Professor Burnside's memoir A Lie About My Father.
Upon hearing the news, Professor Burnside commented, "It's a huge honour to win the Prix Madeleine Zepter in a year when the field was very strong indeed.
"This is an important European prize, whose jury includes some of the most respected French critics, writers and cultural commentators, and whose previous recipients - like Per Pettersen, Ian McEwen and John Banville among others - are all writers I very much admire."
