From quantum matter to global science engagement

Renowned physicist Professor David Pines will
give a public lecture in St Andrews later this
month, prior to the award of an Honorary Degree by the University.
Professor Pines, Distinguished Professor, University of California Davis, will give
a lecture entitled Emergence : from Quantum Matter to Global Science Engagement.
During a career spanning over sixty years, Professor Pines has combined study
of complex collective phenomena in science with efforts to bring the scientific
community together even in the face of geopolitical barriers.
In this lecture, intended for a broad audience, he will describe the
physicist's view of emergence, which he was influential in defining, and
recount his experiences in promoting global science engagement from developing
scientific exchanges between the USA and the communist bloc at the
height of the Cold War, to building the global research and educational
networks of the future.
The lecture takes place on Monday June 22nd 2009 at 5 p.m. in School 3. All
staff, students and members of the public are welcome.
Professor Pines will be made an Honorary Doctor of Science by the University on
Thursday June 25th.
