MU2003 Bagpipes: History, Repertoire and Performance

In conjunction with The National Piping Centre.

This module is offered in both Semester 1 and Semester 2.

Weekly piping lessons are offered in St Andrews with pipers affiliated to and allocated by The National Piping Centre. There will be two study days in Glasgow and a three day weekend school in St Andrews. These will involve group tuition which focuses on widening repertoire and lectures which explore the socio-cultural history of piping in Scotland. This module is open to both beginners and experienced pipers, as the individual lessons are tailored to the ability of the student. The number of students that can be accomodated on this course is strictly limited so please email Jonathan Kemp jk50@st-andrews.ac.uk to check availablity.

Chanters, tutor books and textbooks for the course can be purchased from the Online Shop and collected from the music department administrative support office at 71 North Street.

The course involves teaching provided by the National Piping Centre in Glasgow. Students interested in the second semester sitting of the course should check that these dates do not clash with other compulsory commitments for other courses (class-tests and/or field trips) and that being absent from other classes on these days is acceptable with your school:

  • Study day 1 (Trip to Glasgow) Monday 11th February 2013 (week 3)
  • Weekend School (in St Andrews) Saturday the 9th March all day, Sunday the 10th March all day and the morning of Monday the 11th March 2013 (end of week 6 into the start of week 7)
  • Study day 2 (Trip to Glasgow) Friday the 19th of April 2013 (week 10)
