Since its inception the Music Centre has had an express commitment to promote and provide for music and levels of musical ability. This has resulted in the establishment of numerous ensembles ranging from big band and saxophone ensemble to baroque and opera groups.

In 1994 the university launched the Scottish Certificate in Jazz, and followed this in 1995 with the Advanced Diploma.  In response to numerous enquiries from former students, this year we are launching the Graduate Diploma.  Full details of the courses can be found in the Jazz brochure.

The courses have attracted a wide range of tutors and participants over the years, many of whom have gone on to pursue highly successful careers in jazz.  Former students include Andrew Robb (Scottish Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2009), Alan Benzie (Scottish Young Musician of the Year 2007, currently at Berklee Jazz College in Boston), and Malcolm Edmondstone, director of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland.  Keyboard tutor Richard Michael was named Jazz Educator of the Year at the 2009 Parliamentary Jazz Awards.
