Michael Downes

Michael conducts the St Andrews Chamber Orchestra and St Andrews Opera, and also the town-gown St Andrews Chorus. He lectures on modules MU1005 Reading Opera and MU2004 Electronic Music. Michael studied English and Music at King’s College, Cambridge and the University of Sussex; before coming to St Andrews he was Director of Music at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. His first book, about contemporary composer Jonathan Harvey, was published in 2009 by Ashgate.

Helen Gregory

Helen Looks after the day-to day running of the centre, its services and facilities. Before coming to St Andrews she worked at Perth Concert Hall and Warwick Arts Centre, and was also orchestral manager for the Britten Sinfonia. When she's not at work she enjoys playing the violin, with the Heisenberg Ensemble, chamber groups and in traditional music sessions.

Tom Wilkinson

University Organist and Director of Chapel Choirs

Tom conducts St Salvator's Chapel Choir and oversees the music in St Leonard's Chapel. He teaches on MU1003 Understanding Music, MU1004 Making Music, and is in charge of MU2001 Keyboard Music. Tom studied Music at The Queen's College, Oxford, where he was an organ scholar. From 2008-2009 he was Assistant Director of Music at Chelmsford Cathedral. He has performed in Asia, Africa, the USA and throughout Europe and the UK.

Gillian Craig

Gillian Craig has worked at the Music Centre since its opening in the early 1990's: initially as Principal Teacher, then as Acting Director (1994-95 and 2007-08) and Associate Teacher of clarinet and saxophone. In 2008 she appointed Music Consultant with special responsibility to promote the teaching of conducting, and she also teaches practical options within the academic music modules. For the Music Centre, she conducts the new ST Andrews and Fife Community Orchestra (StAFCO) and the Voice Box, our choir for P5 to P7 children; she is also musical director of Stirling City Choir, the Priory Singers, Crail Children's Orchestra and Choir and her own professional orchestra, the Heisenberg Ensemble.


Ruth Carr

Ruth assists Helen in the day-to-day running of the Music Centre. While Helen is on maternity leave, she has taken on the role of Jazz and Organ Course Co-ordinator. She has worked in the Music Centre for nearly 6 years and before joining the University, she worked as a Bar manager in a village pub. She took up the violin when she was 8 years old and throughout her school years, played in school and regional orchestra's including Fife Youth String Orchestra and Fife Youth Orchestra. These days you would be more likely to find her playing drums rather than violin. She occasionally plays with a local ceilidh band who, in 2007 and 2008, appeared in the Ceilidh Tent at T in the Park. When not at work, she enjoys playing golf, pool and XBOX!
