About the competition

The MUSA Young Artist Award is an annual art competition for schools in Fife. It aims to recognise and support creativity in schools, and to promote learning, using the University’s museum collections as a starting point.

The competition was launched in 2007, to herald the announcement of a new Museum of the University of St Andrews (MUSA). MUSA opened in October 2008 and has already welcomed over 33,000 visitors. Located at 7A the Scores, MUSA provides four exhibition galleries, an education centre, viewing terrace and sculpture garden.

The University of St Andrews has been collecting artefacts of every description since its foundation in 1413. These historical and wide-ranging collections illustrate the story of the University, help us understand the world and serve as sources of inspiration for generations of students and visitors to the town.

Competition Theme: Close Up – Far Away

school children using a talking telescopeThe theme for this year’s competition is Close Up – Far Away. Artworks must be inspired by an object or artwork from the University’s collections.

There are two ways in which schools can explore this topic:

  1. Teachers may book an educational workshop for their class at MUSA. Pupils will have the opportunity to handle artefacts and experiment with art techniques in preparation for the competition. Workshops will be led by MUSA Learning & Access staff. (See Booking A Visit)
  2. 2. Teachers may download images of the University’s collections from this website and use them as a basis for discussion and creative work in the classroom. (See Gallery)

Advice on how the competition can be integrated with the school curriculum can also be found under Teachers' Notes.

How to Enter

Pupils should make their personal, visual response to the competition theme using any 2D or 3D medium including: painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, collage, photography, pottery, textiles, etc.
