Study abroad
Students of Modern Languages have two ways of enriching their study of Spanish through a period of residence abroad. It should be noted that this is determined during the second year of study, irrespective of the initial declaration on the UCAS application. It should also be noted that the year abroad experience is not guaranteed and is competitive, to be earned on merit during the second year of study.
The first way is through the Erasmus University Placement programme, which entails a year of study at one of our partner universities (currently Santiago de Compostela, Bilbao, Valladolid, Alcalá de Henares, and Barcelona). This period of study abroad takes place in the third year of study, and students return with their European marks (ECTS) and complete their degree after a final year in St Andrews.
Alternatively students can add an extra year to their programme and take a work placement in a Spanish-speaking country between their second and third year of study (WIYA with integrated year abroad). The degree is thus completed in five years. The majority of students who choose this option prefer to apply for an English Language Assistantship through the British Council programme. Successful applicants will then teach English at a school, college or University in Spain or Latin America.
