Student life

The Department of Spanish at St Andrews is made up of enthusiastic students from all over the globe and a dedicated teaching team passionate about all things Spanish and Hispanic, ready to share its knowledge and experience whether in lectures, seminars, classes, Friday talks and papers, weekly screenings of Spanish-language films, and occasional play productions.

The Hispanic Society, run by and for the students, is a lively and dynamic group that brings together students of Spanish and students from Latin America engaged in other subjects throughout the University. It organises all sorts of activities, from the weekly tertulias just to chat in Spanish, weekly lunches gastronomically themed by regions, occasional sangría evenings, a formal cabaret-dinner each semester with the staff of the department, occasional salsa, tango or latino dancing, and an annual ball. Above all, the society offers the opportunity to speak Spanish in and out of the department. The Society’s officers can be contacted by emailing hispanic@st-andrews.ac.uk, or via Facebook!
