L. J "Ferdy" Woodward Postgraduate Scholarship

This scholarship is funded by the friends and relatives, students and colleagues, of Professor L. J "Ferdy" Woodward, who founded the Department in 1949 and led it until his retirement in late 1982. Interested Post-Graduates in Spanish should forward their written application to Professor Nigel Dennis, nrd@st-andrews.ac.uk, Research co-ordinator in the Department.

Alan Paterson Honours Prize

This prize is funded by the friends, students and colleagues of Alan Paterson, Professor and Chair of the Department from January 1985 to June 2001. It is awarded to mark the merits of the best Honours Degree achieved annually in the Department.

Colmenaros Prize

The Colmenaros prize was funded by Professor Wright of the Philosophy Department in memory of his wife, who was from Peru. It is awarded annually to an industrious and active student, in good academic standing, in one of the first two years of his/her Spanish course.

Stevenson Scholarship

Sir Daniel Stevenson’s Scholarship is award annually by the Stevenson Committee and is administered by the University of Glasgow. Candidates in their second year apply through the Head of Spanish in January before their departure for a year in Spain.

Alex Richardson Award

This award is funded by the family and friends of the late Alex Richardson, a student of the Department from 2006 until 2009. Its purpose is to enable a second-year student, who intends to study Spanish at Honours level, to undertake an imaginative project in any Spanish-speaking country which will broaden his or her understanding of the culture. Information about the award will be advertised around February, with applications to be submitted at the School Office, addressed to the Head of Department.

D.J. Gifford Travel Fund

This Fund was set up to mark the retirement of the late Professor Douglas Gifford in 1989. It is to enable students travelling to South America, Central America or Mexico to supplement their budget, either to acquire items for their research or to help with their travel and living expenses. Students who are interested, should download an application form from the Modern Languages current students page (this will be advertised once the application is available) and hand it in to the Head of Department before the end of March, stating their reason for applying and the purpose which an award would serve. Please note that the Fund is not intended to finance a whole trip, but to serve as a supplement.
