El Corrido: Identity, Narrative and Memory Places
Few forms of cultural expression are more quickly associated with
Mexican identity than /corridos/, or ballads, such as /La cucaracha, La
Adelita,/ or Benito /Canales/. Daniel Chamberlain examines the character
and structure of oral narrative compositions like the corrido in
relation to the character and structure of identity development as
proposed by Paul Ricoeur. By approaching the question of identity from a
phenomenological perspective, Chamberlain suggests that, in spite of
differences, similarities between the qualities of this narrative form
and identity development in general give the ballad a privileged
position in Mexicans’ sense of identity.
