Linguistics Institute of St Andrews (LISA)

The Tower of BabelThe Linguistics Institute of St Andrews (LISA) had its inaugural meeting on 4 March 1996 (under the name of SAILLS - the St Andrews Institute of Language and Linguistic Studies). Its Director from 1996 to 2007 was Prof RA Lodge (Dept of French). The current Director is Dr C Beedham (Dept of German).

The Linguistics Institute is based in the School of Modern Languages, but encompasses all colleagues in the University who are interested in language and linguistics. Its aims are:

  • To facilitate the exchange of ideas on linguistics between colleagues in and outwith St Andrews;
  • To encourage postgraduate research in language and linguistics;
  • To raise awareness of the link between linguistics and language teaching, a link which is mutually beneficial to both activities.
