Forum for French Transcultural Studies
The Forum for French Transcultural Studies is a network of scholars at the Universities of Aberdeen, St Andrews and Stirling, located within easy reach of one another in central and east-coast Scotland. Composed of experts in literature, film, social anthropology, history, philosophy, postcolonial theory and cultural studies, the Forum represents one of the world’s most powerful and widely-published concentrations of researchers in the broad field of Francophone studies.
Forum members study the moments and modes of exchange between French-speakers around the world. We are interested in the ways in which Francophone societies have transferred, inflected and rejected ideas, language and practices, and in the cultural products that arise from those encounters. Chronologically, our work stretches from the early modern period to the present day; geographically, our interests take in the entirety of the French-speaking world, with a particular emphasis on Francophone cultures outside Europe, and their interactions with metropolitan France. Most of our research focuses on film and on writing of all kinds, but we also have strong interests in the plastic arts, performance, museums, political discourse and other forms of expression.
The Forum advertises forthcoming events, holds collaborative workshops and conferences and provides a further channel of communication for visiting speakers and scholars at its three Universities.
