Undergraduate Study

The highly-rated School of Modern Languages offers a wide range of degree programmes in one, two or even three languages, or in one or two languages and a non-language subject. Arabic (starting 2011-12), French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish all offer Single Honours degree programmes, with Arabic, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish available from Beginners’ level. Comparative Literature can be studied as 50% of a two-subject degree. Our programme structures are amongst the most flexible in the UK.

Our degree courses provide a rich intellectual experience, based on the premise that a student cannot become successfully bi-lingual without also becoming bi-cultural. Through small-group language classes designed within the School and supported by our new Multi-Media Centre, students acquire high-order written and spoken language competence, applicable in a variety of professional situations: for example, researching a topic, rapid note-taking, analyzing complex written and audio-visual material, communicating judgements, presenting  balanced proposals, and participating in and chairing discussions. At the same time, students acquire a solid understanding of the target culture, including literature, cinema, history and society, and may pursue their individual interests in these areas through the wide range of choices available in their two Honours years. All of these activities are underpinned by vigorous promotion of independent, critical thought and intellectual curiosity. While it is not compulsory, we strongly recommend that students spend their third year abroad, either studying at a partner University (4-year degree) or on a work placement, typically as an English language assistant (5-year “WIYA” degree).

Our Graduate Attributes, including knowledge of other cultures and identities, high-level language and communication skills in both English and the language of study, and the capacity to process and assimilate complex material, are highly prized by employers and our graduates work in a wide variety of exciting situations around the world.
