You can earn postgraduate degrees (one-year Masters and 3-year PhDs) in the following areas:
- French Studies
- German Studies
- Italian Studies
- Russian, Central and Eastern European Studies
- Spanish and Latin American Studies
- Advanced Language Studies
- Cultural Identity Studies
- Linguistics
- Mediaeval Studies
- Crossways in European Humanities (a joint degree with European universities)
In each of those, you select your personal programmes from a comprehensive variety of options. You will be taught one-on-one or in small groups by experts in their fields. You can also do joint research degrees with most other subjects in the humanities.
We are a lively community of scholars from many different backgrounds and nations. All our staff and most of our postgraduates live and work in St Andrews or in the surrounding countryside, and faculty are always accessible for hands-on advice and exchange. We provide a stimulating intellectual environment, with our four research institutes, frequent seminars, international conferences and guest lectures, and our journal Forum for Modern Language Studies, published by Oxford University Press.
Each of our postgraduates is provided with study space (usually an office in the School) and computing facilities. Most of our research students benefit from School bursaries that contribute to their living costs. Many hold fees waivers from the University or the School, or awards from other funding bodies. Our postgraduates often go on to careers in the academic field, as university teachers, researchers or administrators. Others find employment, for example, as cultural advisors, translators or in the public or civil service.
Browse our web pages for further information about the School and individual members of staff, including their research areas and publications.
