Research and Teaching
I was born in Uruguay and trained there and in the UK (BA at Nottingham; PhD at Cambridge), coming to St Andrews as a Lecturer in 1989. My main teaching is in Latin American Literature and culture. My research interests are in two complementary areas. The first is the cultural history of Uruguay, in particular some writers who have achieved an international dimension in Latin America and beyond, such as José Enrique Rodó, Juana de Ibarbourou and Juan Carlos Onetti. In general my work is aware of historical context and issues of cultural and national identity; this is my second area of interest, both in connection with Uruguay and Latin America more generally and with the effect and experience of some subcultures who settled there, notably the Galician and Scottish diaspora. I am currently the Director of the St Andrews Institute of European Cultural Identity Studies.
