Research and Teaching
My educational background includes the study of Philosophy, Theology, and Latin and Italian language and literature, which, in retrospect, might make my research interest in Dante seem almost inevitably fated, if initially unforeseen. Besides Dante (se è lecito dire) I am also interested in Italian detective fiction. I have published on prophecy in Dante’s Commedia and on his early commentators’ responses to problematic parts of the poem, which touches on my present research into the structure of the Inferno and theories on the composition of the poem. I am also currently looking at the effects of fascist censorship on the actual composition of Italian detective fiction of that period.
In 2009 I started the Lectura Dantis Andreapolitana in collaboration with Claudia Rossignoli. This is a very exciting and ambitious project which brings experts in Dante from all over the UK and abroad to St Andrews to deliver lectures on the Divine Comedy which are open to the public. I have taught undergraduate modules on Italian literature from the 13th, 14th, 16th, 19th and 20th centuries, as well as Translation Methodology, and supervised dissertations on a variety of topics ranging from Boccaccio to the mafia. I teach a postgraduate module in the School of Modern Languages on ‘Concepts of Love in Early Italian Literature’, and I also teach on the Postgraduate programme of the St Andrews Institute of Mediaeval Studies.
