Research and Teaching
My primary research interests are in nineteenth-century German literature, especially Theodor Fontane, and space in literature. In my doctoral work, Space in Theodor Fontane’s Works, (London: MHRA, 2012), I provide a series of spatial close readings, arguing that Fontane’s representation of space becomes increasingly reflexive. Space is indeed a means of literary expression, but more importantly it is also a theme of literary exploration, through which Fontane discusses the function of art for the modern individual. I have also published on Fontane’s Shakespeare reception and Hamlet translation. My current research re-examines the impact of Realism and its place in the European canon; I am particularly interested in parallels between literary strategies in the Nouveau Roman and German Realism. Initial research on centre-periphery paradigms in German and French writing between 1848 and 1968 indicate that it will be possible to trace a several overlapping lines of influence from Realist authors (such as Keller) to Nietzsche, Thomas Mann into both French critical theorists (such as Foucault) and Nouveau Romanciers (such as Butor and Sarraute).
