Research and Teaching

My research and teaching activities lie in three interrelated and complementary areas: cultural history, popular literature, and literary anthropology. In my monograph The Wanderer in Nineteenth-Century German Literature I survey developments ranging from the practices of identity formation associated with groups ranging from artisans to Romantic scientists, to such changes as emigration, pauperization and tourism, the rise of an “ideology of the settled life,” and the reification of Bildung. Using the motif of the wanderer as a linking element, I concentrate on the discourses on education, science, politics and social marginality in a century where people, goods and ideas became mobile as never before.

My co-edited collection Populäre Erscheinungen (with Barry Murnane) contributes to the book history of the nineteenth century by studying the German Schauerroman (Gothic novel) at the time of its first flourishing around 1800, at the very moment that reading becomes transformed as a social practice.

My second co-edited collection Popular Revenants (with Barry Murnane) is the first book dedicated to the German Gothic in over thirty years. It builds on work done in Populäre Erscheinungen to pursue the subsequent career of the German Gothic beyond 1800, tracing its revenants in other discourses and media, and its role in processes of cultural transfer.

Literary anthropology offers a sound basis for investigating such themes as ethnography, the body in literature, identity construction, ritual and performativity, and psychology. It is an approach that has guided my interpretations of texts by Herder, Goethe, Heine and Büchner, and essays on Schiller and Mörike.

My current research focuses on cultural historians, a group of authors hovering on the threshold between academic history and literature, writers whose unabashedly popular works were also highly innovative and controversial. For this project I was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship to the Humboldt Universität Berlin in 2011.
