Research and Teaching
Professor Lodge's central area of expertise lies in historical sociolinguistics, with particular reference to Gallo-Romance. Since February 2008, thanks to a two-year Leverhulme Emeritus Fellowship, he has been completing his edition of part of the medieval archives of Montferrand (Puy-de-Dôme, France) - the town's consular account-books, 1258-1388. These documents are of considerable value to social, economic and political historians, but Lodge is concerned with the information they provide about the Auvergnat dialect in this period. The edition is being published in three tranches (in hard copy and in electronic form) by the Ecole des Chartes, Paris. The project has involved frequent study-visits to Clermont-Ferrand and Paris, in addition to which Lodge has has examined two doctoral theses on medieval Auvegnat in Paris-Sorbonne, and has lectured in numerous universities (Limoges, Montpellier, New Orleans, Paris, Oxford, Chambéry, Aix-en-Provence, Bonn, Tokyo), both on the Montferrand project and on historical sociolinguistics, principally with respect to Parisian urban speech.
