Research and Teaching
My research Interests to date have focused on C17th French literature, and especially the theatre, with a two volume critical edition of Paul Scarron’s complete theatre due soon with Droz (Geneva). I am about to embark on what I hope will turn out to be a major interdisciplinary research project based around prisons, starting in C17th French theatre and branching into other literary genres, other languages and other disciplines such as English, History, Film Studies, Art History, Social Anthropology, Psychlogy and Philosophy. I intend to organize a conference on this theme in St Andrews in summer 2013.
My teaching interests largely reflect the above. I coordinate an introductory module on C17th French literature in general, and also run two more specialized modules concentrating on the theatre at the time from all perspectives. The latter also have specific goals in teaching students research skills. I also coordinate the Senior Honours Communication Skills modules which teach language as communication and not simply conventional grammar.
