Multi-Media Centre

The Multi-Media Centre (MMC), inaugurated during the 2008-09 academic year, is a digital language lab provided by Televic which has been playing an increasingly important part in the School’s language teaching.

Located in the School of Modern Languages’ Buchanan Building in St Andrews town centre, the MMC comprises two adjoining computer classrooms (of 18 and 15 student workstations), that can be used either separately or combined into one larger room. The rooms are available for open access whenever they are not reserved for teaching. A monitor at the reception area outside the School Office advises students of the availability of the MMC for self-access purposes.

Language modules from all subjects taught within the School include integrated activities that students carry out in the MMC. These may be used in either face-to-face teaching or self-study, and they involve the use of a wide range of digital media.

Through the MMC, students gain access to satellite television for all six languages taught in the School of Modern Languages (Arabic, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish), up-to-date audio and visual materials designed or selected by their tutors in the target languages to support their learning, and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) software to practise their grammar.

There will be induction and taster sessions throughout the academic year to show students how to use the facility; students are advised to watch out for emails from the School's Language Development Officer inviting them to register for one of those sessions.
