School of Modern Languages

A view of the Quad

The School of Modern Languages in St Andrews is named fourth in the Guardian University Guide 2009, after Oxford, Cambridge and Southampton. The individual languages taught at the School also appear within the top five places in The Complete University Guide 2010.

Modern Languages was rated excellent in the Teaching Qualify Assessment conducted by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council. The report described the 'exceptional' teaching quality and the superb care and guidance offered in St Andrews across the full range of the live languages.

School of Modern Languages participates in Erasmus Mundus Masters Programme: Crossways in Humanities.

Further details of the School can be found under sections on Undergraduate Study and Postgraduate Study.

The University of St Andrews School of Modern Languages includes the departments of French, German, Italian, Linguistics, Russian and Spanish. The modular degree structure at St Andrews means that students can study modules from either of these Departments up to final year level for the MA Honours degree, or else for one, two or three years for students requiring less specific knowledge or skills. The detailed individual departmental entries show the various ways in which these languages can be studied, either by themselves or in combination with other languages or nonlanguage subjects. There is a wide range of such subjects available for combination with any one or two of the five languages within the Arts Faculty.

Many students come to St Andrews having completed A-Level or Higher qualifications in a language then find they are interested in studying another language from scratch. Beginners' classes are available in most languages. The departments are dedicated and friendly, and strive to make students feel part of their particular communities.
