Study Abroad

The German Department offers the full range of Study-Abroad opportunities enjoyed by students of Modern Languages in St Andrews. Many students – who are native speakers of English – choose to spend their Year Abroad teaching English at a school in Germany or Austria. This programme is run by the British Council.

We also have strong links with Bonn University and University of Vienna, with whom we share a university placement programme. The University of Vienna is particularly attractive to students of Comparative Literature. University Placement students can spend either one semester or two semesters of their Junior Honours year at the host university.

The German Department currently does not have any formal links with employers to provide industrial work placements but we have a database of previous internships completed by our students. They range from translation work via Big Business to teaching Scottish country dancing in a college. Internships of this kind can last from a few weeks in the summer to one semester or a full year.

Furthermore there are summer schools and language courses run by German universities, the Goethe Institute and other providers on which we hold comprehensive information.
