School of Modern Languages to host SPELLING BEE*

Spelling bee

Tuesday 04 December 2012

The School of Modern Languages will be hosting the first Spelling Bee of its kind in Scotland in collaboration with St. Leonards School. Prizes include cash up to £75 and over 30 schools have registered to take part.

The competition is divided into two age groups (age 13 and under & age 14 - 16) and would typically suit S1/S2 and S3 respectively. The three languages being tested are French, German and Spanish. Participating schools are sent a total of three vocabulary lists per language, each containing 100 expressions which students need to learn and they will be tested on 40 of those expressions. Students are expected to give the English translation of a word or expression conveyed by their teacher and they have to be able to spell the words or phrases correctly with a total of two points per expression being awarded (one for the correct spelling, one for the correct translation).

In-class competitions for each language and entered age category are followed by a second stage where class winners in each age category and language will be competing with one another within each of the registered schools. Winners from each age category and language in each participating school will then go through to the finals to be hosted at the University of St Andrews on Friday, 14 June 2013.

Courtesy of LanguagePerfect, any participating school is automatically eligible to enter up to 50 students free of charge for the next LanguagePerfect World Championships (20 - 30 May 2013).

* The Spelling Bee has been organised with the kind and very generous support of European Schoolbooks Ltd., Goethe-Institut Glasgow, Heinle/Cengage Learning, Language Perfect, Santander, Televic, UK German Connection and Youthbridge.
