Conference in Paris

Professor Nigel Dennis gave the inaugural lecture (in French) at an international conference held at the Université de Paris III, Sorbonne Nouvelle, in May. The subject was: “Aux sources de la creation artistique: pastiche, citation et variations autour de l’emprunt”.
He has recently published:

On November 18th, postgraduate students from all over Scotland came to St Andrews to participate in the Interdisciplinary Conference 'Images of the Past.' It was organised by three PhD Students (Beatriz Tadeo Fuica, Jutta Kling and Andrew Dodd) from different disciplines (Centre for Film Studies, School of Modern Languages and School of History respectively). The aim of the conference was to offer postgraduate students of the Faculty of Arts at the University of St Andrews and neighbouring Scottish Universities the possibility to share their research in an interdisciplinary environment.

Research in South Africa

While researching in the collection of Sir George Grey, governor of the Cape Colony, Dr David Culpin came across a rare book published in South Africa almost two centuries ago about the survivors of the shipwrecked merchant ship, The Eole, in April 1829. It is thought to be the first book in French and likely one of the first travel narratives published in South Africa.

The application for a GRADskills Innovation Grant by three postgraduate students for their forthcoming conference Images of the Past, has been successful. Jutta Kling, Beatriz Tadeo Fuica and Andrew Dodd have been awarded awarded £893 towards costs of the postgraduate conference to be held in the Gateway Building on Fri 18 November 2011.

The School of Modern Languages hosted a Show & Tell event on 19 October 2011 with the aim of sharing current practices in the use of Moodle for language teaching and to discuss ideas with colleagues from ELT. The event was well attended and started off by a Welcome from the School of Modern Languages' Director of Teaching, Dr Julia Prest, followed by a series of short presentations on the different Moodle tools and subsequent Q & A sessions.

In a drive to pool experience and exchange ideas in language teaching, the School of Modern Languages will be hosting a Show & Tell event in conjunction with ELT in order to showcase and explore different ways of using Moodle for teaching.
A number of presentations on the different Moodle tools (e.g. Quizzes, Feedback, Wiki etc.) by staff from Modern Languages and ELT will be followed by questions and answers and a general discussion of Moodle functionality and future events. Representatives from CAPOD and ITS have also been invited to attend. The Show & Tell session will take place on Wednesday, 19 October at 2.30 pm in Buchanan 306. Tea and coffee will be provided.
Eve Morisi on French television

Dr Eve Morisi has just published Albert Camus contre la peine de mort, a complete collection of Camus's texts on capital punishment, including about thirty as-yet unpublished documents. She has also recently appeared on the French ‘Public Sénat’ channel alongside Robert Badinter when she took part in the programme ‘Bibliothèque Médicis’ dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the abolition of death penalty in France.
New publications

Professor Ronnie Ferguson is giving an invited paper at the international conference “Molte cose stanno bene nella penna che ne la scena starebben male”. Teatro e lingua in Ruzante. The conference, on Renaissance theatre, is being held at Padua and Pernumia in the Veneto on the 26th and 27th of October 2011 under the sponsorship of the Regione del Veneto, the Provincia di Padova, the Accademia del Teatro in Lingua Veneta and the University of Padua. Professor Ferguson’s paper, titled Poetiche del paradosso nel teatro ruzantiano, will be published in the conference proceedings by the publisher CLEUP in 2012.
Dr Gustavo San Román is spending part of his sabbatical in Uruguay, continuing his work on José Enrique Rodó. Whilst there, he also ensured the publication of a book based on two British-Academy-funded seminars, one in Edinburgh (November 2009), the other in Montevideo (April 2009), of which he is one of editors and contributors. The book is being presented this month at the University of Uruguay.

During October, Dr Claire Whitehead is a Visiting Researcher at UCRS (Uppsala Centre for Russian and Eurasian Studies) at Uppsala University in Sweden. She will deliver two research papers: one on 18/10/11 on 'Boris Akunin and Contemporary Russian Crime Fiction: Literary Historiography and Intertextuality' to UCRS; and one on 24/10/11 to the Slavic Department on 'Nineteenth-Century Russian Crime Fiction: Contexts and Conventions'.

The School has had great success in last session’s URIP (paid internship) scheme, with three of our departments – French, German and Spanish – involved. The University received 100 applications, from which they funded 20, 15 in science and 5 in arts. Of the 5 in arts 2 went to the SoML: Emily Sheppard, for a project using the ‘method of lexical exceptions’ to investigate gender in the French noun, supervised by Chris Beedham and Dave Evans; and Jessica Johnstone, for a Spanish sociolinguistic project, supervised by Kormi Anipa. The URIP poster session was held on 5 October, where Chris Hawkesworth announced three prizewinners, in which Emily Sheppard won second prize.
