Latest research award success

RSE logoSeveral academics in Modern Languages have recently secured funding from Scottish-based institutions. Dr K Anipa (Spanish Department) received funding from the Carnegie Trust and the Royal Society of Edinburgh to carry out research in Spain on his project 'Juan de Valdes, Dialogo de la lengua. A diplomatic edition'.

Carnegie Trust logoDr Emily Finer (Russian Department) secured funding from the Carnegie Trust which will enable her to work on a project entitled 'The Best of Times, The Worst of Times: Reading Charles Dickens in the Soviet Union'.

Elodie Laugt, from the French Department, will be carrying out research in France in spring 2013 thanks to funding from the Carnegie Trust on her project 'Le partage de la littérature'.

600th Anniversary PhD Scholarships

The University of St Andrews has announced a new prestigious PhD scholarship scheme. The School of Modern Languages is offering up to three scholarships, available from September 2013, comprising fees plus an annual stipend of up to £15,000 for three years. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic quality and research promise, and are open to all to apply.

The School of Modern Languages will be hosting the first Spelling Bee of its kind in Scotland in collaboration with St. Leonards School. Prizes include cash up to £75 and over 30 schools have registered to take part.

Dr Kirill Dmitriev secures prestigious funding award

Language–Philology–Culture. Arab Cultural Semantics in Transition - ERC Starting Grant (2013-2017)

Dr Kirill Dmitriev

The project aims to study:

  • the semantic development of the vocabulary of the Arabic language,
  • philological discourses on the semantic changes in the language in the classical Arabic philological tradition (8th-10th centuries A.D.), and
  • the impact of Arabic philology in the wider historical and cultural context of the Judaeo-Arab neo-classical heritage (12th-13th centuries A.D.) and Christian-Arab intellectual history on the eve of modernity (19th century A.D.).

PhD Student on visiting research fellowship at Universität Hamburg

Marissa Munderloh thumbnail Marissa Munderloh, a second year PhD student in the German Department, will be working as a visiting research fellow at Universität Hamburg's Graduate School for Media and Communication from April until August 2012. She will be analysing and presenting her data gathered in Hamburg for her PhD research on Urban Identity Constructions in German Hip Hop Culture.

Dr Eleni Kefala wins prestigious research award

AHRC logo thumbnail Dr Eleni Kefala has been awarded an AHRC Early Career Fellowship for the academic year 2012-2013. She will be working on her second monograph, Spectacular Modernities: Buenos Aires Across the Arts, 1921-1939, which explores representations of the iconic city of Buenos Aires in the interwar period, drawing on evidence from literature, film, photography, music and painting.

Language Open Day: 14 May 2012 (10.00 - 15.00)

In a drive to promote languages at school level, the School of Modern Languages will be hosting a Language Open Day for local schools on 14 May 2012 between 10 am and 3 pm. The activities on offer range from taster sessions in six different languages and mini-lectures to a guided tour of our University museum MUSA and a quiz with fantastic prizes for the winners. There will also be plenty of opportunity for teachers and pupils to meet and talk to university staff, undergraduates and postgraduates.

Kaeufliche liebe im mittelalter Laura Schleicher SAT1 thumbnailJamie Page, a PhD student supervised jointly by Dr Bettina Bildhauer in the School of Modern Languages and Professor Frances Andrews in the School of History, has appeared in a documentary on prostitution in the Middle Ages in Germany entitled "Käufliche Liebe im Mittelalter," made by the Munich-based production company Bilderfest for the channel SAT. 1.

Persian at St Andrews

PR1001 bookPersian will be taught at St Andrews at undergraduate level for the first time starting this semester. PR1001 will be taught by Maryam Ghorbankarimi (mg91@st-andrews.ac.uk), whose PhD research is in film studies at the University of Edinburgh, focusing on the representation of women in the Iranian cinema of the 1990s. Maryam has successfully taught Persian language to postgraduates in the School of History at St Andrews for the last 4 years.
