The ERASMUS university-placement programme does not include Russia. However, a first-semester university-placement placement in France, Germany, Italy or Spain can be combined with module 'RU3102 Semester of Study in Russia' or 'ML3106 Period of Study at a non-ERASMUS higher education institution'.
Description: Module RU3102 is offered subject to the availability of a suitable venue and to the consent of the Head of the School of Modern Languages (in consultation with the University Executive). It is an optional part of the degree programme for students who have not spent a year in Russia as part of a degree 'With Integrated Year Abroad' (WIYA). The module is normally timed for the second semester of the Junior Honours year and is intended to develop students' skills in all aspects of the modern Russian language through extended residence and study in the country, offering total immersion in the culture. The syllabus is designed in co-operation with a university or other institution in a Russia. Students taking module ML3106 are enrolled on the five-year degree programme and combine a semester of study in Russia with a semester work placement in another country. All Russian courses are run by RLUS (Russian Language Undergraduate Studies). All information about the organisation itself, courses, studying placements, documents, useful links etc can be find at the RLUS website: http://www.rlus.co.uk.
For those students of Russian have not spent a year in Russia as part of a degree 'With Integrated Year Abroad' (WIYA) or a semester in Russia (RU3102), an optional module an intensive summer course in Russia (RU3103) is available.
Description: Module RU3103 is offered subject to the availability of a suitable venue and to the consent of the Head of the School of Modern Languages (in consultation with the University Executive). RU3103 is a six week intensive self-accessed summer course in Russia and is worth 15 credits towards a degree. The module is normally timed for the summer break of the Junior Honours year. It is intended to develop students' skills in all aspects of modern Russian through extended residence and study in the country, thus offering total immersion in the culture. The syllabus is designed in co-operation with a university or other institution in Russia.
In addition to the Russian core abroad studies modules, an intensive summer course in Russia (RU2100) is available.
Description: Module RU2100 is offered only to students with a Joint or Triple subject degree that have enrolled and successfully completed the Russian for Beginners courses (RU1001 and RU1002) and second level courses in other subjects. The module has been specifically designed as a pathway to the Honours Russian programme linking the first level to the third level. The module is an intensive four-week Russian language and culture course held in Russia. This module will bring the students' proficiency in Russian up to a level equivalent to that reached by students passing RU2002 or RU2004 at the appropriate level (Grade 11). RU2100 is solely a language module and does not include a literature element. The module is worth 40 credits, which Russian students would normally expect to gain at the second level, if they studied language only.
