Studying in Germany/Austria: The university sector in both countries has recently undergone massive changes and now matches the European Union’s BA/MA structure. The old Magister and Diploma curricula are being phased out. This makes studying there much more straightforward for exchange students from the US, UK and Ireland, as our students now slot right in where they would be in the British system. Generally speaking things are larger at many Austrian and German universities than they are at St Andrews: class sizes, number of contact hours and responsibilities. Students are often expected to write dissertations for their continuous assessment. Academic standards regarding referencing and bibliographies are held in high esteem throughout the sector in the German-speaking countries. Overall studying in Germany or Austria is a great experience for students who are intellectually curious, self-reliant, pro-active and ambitious.
