Study Abroad

Students of Arabic may apply to spend all or part of their third year studying at the American University in Cairo, Egypt or the Lebanese American University in Beirut, Lebanon. The programme at the American University in Cairo comprises Arabic and other academic disciplines including International Relations and History. This programme runs over the whole academic year. The programme at the Lebanese American University in Beirut is currently focused on Arabic language courses and is offered during the first semester of the academic year only. As part of the Study Abroad agreement students of the University of St Andrews are provided with on campus accommodation at the American University in Cairo and the Lebanese American University in Beirut. For security reasons accommodation off campus is not possible. The Study Abroad coordinator of the Department of Arabic monitors political and security developments in the region, maintains close contact with the students enrolled in the Study Abroad programme and pays pastoral visits to the hosting institutions in Cairo and Beirut. There are also summer schools and intensive language courses run by Arab universities and language schools, for example in Morocco, Jordan and Tunis, on which we hold comprehensive information. The Department of Arabic does not provide work placements in Arab countries.
