Subjects at the School of Modern Languages
The School of Modern Languages is housed on two sites in the heart of St Andrews town centre. Russian and Spanish are located on the second floor in the historic St Salvator’s Quad, next to the University chapel; Arabic, French, German and Italian occupy the modernist Buchanan Building, two minutes’ walk away on Union Street. The Buchanan also houses the School Office, the Multimedia Centre, the University’s largest lecture theatre, Modern Languages postgraduate accommodation and the editorial headquarters of the international journal Forum for Modern Language Studies. All our classrooms in both buildings have been recently refurbished to provide comfortable, flexible teaching space with whiteboards, networked computers and data projectors. Both buildings are less than five minutes’ walk from the University Library and most other Arts Faculty Schools.
Our new Comparative Literature programme, starting in 2011, brings together academic staff from all six Departments in the School of Modern Languages – Arabic, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish – as well as members of the School of English (with contributions from colleagues in other Schools) in an exciting collaborative intercultural venture.
