Research and Teaching
My research is broadly concerned with the cultural and intellectual history of Germany from the Enlightenment to the Weimar Republic, with a particular focus on Herder, Nietzsche and the philosophical impact of Darwinism. I am also interested in Anglo-German relations and the theory and practice of translation.
I teach Honours modules on 'German Identity and the Jewish Question', 'Reason and Revolt: German Culture in the Enlightenment', 'Gods, Greece and the German imagination', and on science and literature.
