Research and Teaching
Dr Beedham's research area is the linguistics of modern German (also Russian and English), especially strong verbs, the passive, structuralism, and methodology. He is developing a 'method of lexical exceptions', in which the researcher takes unexplained lexical exceptions to a grammatical rule and uses them as a basis for empirical research. A video of Dr Beedham giving a paper at the IVG (Internationale Vereinigung für Germanistik) congress in Warsaw 2010 on a newly discovered formal link between strong verbs and prefixes in German is available on Dr Beedham's web pages. Dr Beedham teaches Honours (= 3rd and 4th year) modules GM3080 'Grammatical Rules and Lexical Exceptions in Modern German' to students of German and ML3201 ‘Grammatical Rules and Lexical Exceptions’ to language students not specialising in German. You can watch a video of a sample class of GM3080, on the passive, and a video of a sample class of ML3201, also on the passive. Dr Beedham invites proposals for a PhD using the method of lexical exceptions.
