Research and Teaching
I am currently working on a monograph entitled Music, Memory and Mechanism: The Poetic Theory and Practice of Théodore de Banville, examining the crucial contribution made by Banville to nineteenth-century French musico-poetics. I am also looking at Debussy’s song settings of Banville’s poems, examining the ways in which music and poetry interacted in France in the second half of the nineteenth century, and I am preparing a special issue of the journal Dix-Neuf entitled Théodore de Banville: La Poésie en jeu(x). I teach Honours modules on nineteenth-century literature, culture and society, including ‘Music in Nineteenth-Century French Poetry’ (FR4078) and ‘Writing the Nineteenth Century’ (FR3076), and the M.Litt. course ‘The Metamorphoses of Orpheus’ (FR5106). I have supervised a Ph.D. on the poetry of Heather Dohollau, a Welsh-born poet living in Brittany and writing in French, and am currently supervising doctoral research on literary representations of regional and national identities in Alsace and Corsica. I would be interested in supervising Ph.D. students on any aspect of French poetic theory from the medieval period to the twenty-first century.
