Research and Teaching

Gavin Bowd is Lecturer in French at St Andrews since 1997. His research covers various aspects of modern and contemporary France, Romania and Scotland: Communism and post-Communism; the remembrance and representation of war; colonial geography; geopoetics. Much of his research has been done in the archives of the Comintern (Moscow), the French and Romanian Communist Parties, and the Securitate (Bucharest), as well as in the Archives d'Outre-Mer (Aix-en-Provence). He has organised and co-organised international conferences on Situationist revolt, France and Romania, tropicality, Kenneth White and Michel Houellebecq. He is also a published translator, journalist and creative writer.
