The Masters in Research in Management Studies (MRes) aims to provide a firm training base for research in the field of Management and Organisation Studies. The programme is normally taken as the first part of the School's broader research training programme and, as such, is suitable for those who seek to progress to Doctoral research. The MRes may be taken as a stand alone programme but this is very rare and is at the discretion of the School.
Please note: A place on the MRes Programme does not imply automatic admission to the Doctoral Programme.

Research Training in the MRes at St Andrews
As Scotland's First University, one of the most successful research institutions in the world, and one of the oldest and most attractive Universities, St Andrews offers a postgraduate experience of remarkable richness. We support a vibrant and diverse community of post-graduate students through St Leonard's College, which offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities and support across a range of issues for post graduate students.
The School of Management at the University of St Andrews is one of the UK's leading business and management schools, with a consistently high ranking in the Guardian's subject listings. (See News for updates.) We are proud of our distinctive identity as a smaller school focused on research and teaching of the highest quality. The School is research intensive with a strong grounding in the social sciences, where engagement with society is emphasised, underpinned by an ethos of responsible enterprise. At postgraduate level, students can benefit from internationally-recognised research expertise across a range of themes, while still enjoying the benefits of a small and friendly institution.
The MRes programme aims to achieve a balance between the need for a sound, liberal, academic education with an adult learner-centred approach to developing the necessary research skills for doctoral study. We seek to achieve this through a student-centred learning environment where the development of generic (social science) and subject specific (management and organisation) research skills and knowledge may be developed, together with an understanding of the essential managerial, interpersonal, analytical and learning skills required for doctoral study. In line with the School’s responsible enterprise research and teaching ethos, you will be encouraged to examine and engage with the ethical dimensions of management and organisation in your studies and research.
The programme structure is modular, is 12 months in duration and students must acquire 180 credits to successfully complete the degree. There are six core modules and one optional module, in addition to the dissertation module. The core social science and management/organisation taught modules are taken by all MRes in Management Studies students. The optional module is the choice of each student and should reflect individual research interests. The core modules comprise 120 of the required 180 credits and are taken in Semesters One and Two (months 1-9 of the programme). Four of the core modules are in research methodology and methods. These social science modules are provided across the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (incorporating social science) and are taken with students from other Schools within the University. There are also two core management and organisation studies modules, taken within the School of Management. The remaining taught option module may be chosen from a wide range of modules offered through the post graduate taught Masters programmes run within the School (subject to availability).
The completion of the dissertation (worth 60 credits) takes place in months 9-12 of the programme. The choice of option module in either Semester One or Two should reflect the topic of interest for the dissertation wherever possible.
We require an undergraduate degree from a recognised university at 2:1 or above, or equivalent.
For international students, the language requirement would normally be an IELTS score of 7 or more.

"Making the leap from undergraduate study to conducting research can be daunting for even the most accomplished student- especially in such a well regarded research institution. The MRes degree programme proved invaluable to me in navigating the journey from student to researcher. The school taught modules allow the student to develop their subject-specific interests while the social science modules incorporate an eclectic mix of research interests from across the University that provide for a broad, energising learning experience."
