Meet Us in Your Country: Vietnam
In March 2012, the School of Management visited Vietnam with the ISC-UKEAS Spring Education Fairs. Julie Brooks, Director of Postgraduate Programmes, contributed to the online news magazine Dan Tri during her stay, answering a wide range of questions about programmes, application and admissions.

"Business of Fashion" Conference
The School of Management welcomed "The Business of Fashion: Historical Perspectives" international conference 8-9 March 2012. The Institute for Capitalising on Creativity (ICC) co-hosted academics from the UK, Europe, USA and Japan. Co-sponsors of the event were the Department of History and Welsh History at Aberystwyth University and the School of Management and Languages at Heriot-Watt University.

MLitt HRM students celebrate
MLitt HRM students celebrate 
In March 2012, students reading for the degree of MLitt Human Resource Management organised a dinner at The Grill House Restaurant to relax after challenging classes and coursework assignments and to celebrate the completion of the first six months of the Masters programme. They were joined by Programme Directors Martin Dowling and Shiona Chillas, and Administrative Assistant Lucille Schindler. The group enjoyed the evening and planned further get-togethers, including a day trip by coach to see some of Scotland's beautiful countryside - immediately after the May 2012 exams.

Researchers Addressing Gender Inequality
In recognition of International Women's Day (IWD) - celebrated and commemorated around the world on 8 March - School of Management researchers joined with colleagues at Leuphana Universität Lüneburg to put together a "Research Snapshot" focussing on how to address gender inequality at board level in 2012.

Postgraduate Quiz winners, February 2012
On 8 February 2012, School of Management students took first place in a pub quiz hosted by the Committee of the University of St Andrews Students' Association Postgraduate Society. The quiz was held at the Student Union bar and had four rounds: general knowledge, song lyrics, St. Andrews trivia, and a films section. Of the six students on the winning team, four were management students pursuing an MLitt in Human Resource Management. Two students studying for degrees in Spanish completed the victorious team known as the "Crocodile Dundees". As a prize for their brain draining efforts, the group received a bottle of wine for their celebrations.

Meet Us in Your Country: Russia
Julie Brooks, Director of Postgraduate Programmes, School of Management, visited Russia in February 2012, meeting with prospective students in St Petersburg and Moscow.

Research Student Receives Award
Christian Grahle receives HORIZONT Foundation awardSchool of Management PhD student Christian Grahle has received a €7,500 research grant from the German HORIZONT Foundation. The aims of the Foundation include the advancement of education and furthering the training of young talent, as well as the science and research of the communication, media and advertising industries. The 2012 Award Show was held on 17 January at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt and attended by more than 1000 decision makers in the fields of marketing, advertising, and media. The laudatory address was given by Mr Lothar Leonard, chairman of the advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather Germany. Grahle will use the prize money for his PhD project which involves analysing the different perspectives on creativity held by advertising practitioners, utilising an ethnographic research approach.

School hosts CIPD "Knowledge into Practice" HRM Seminar
On 8 November 2011, over 20 academics and practitioners working in the area of human resource management gathered in the School of Management for a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Knowledge into Practice seminar titled "Networks and Collaboration: Their Contribution to Professional Practice".

"Adding Value: Creativity Applied", November 2011
A thought-provoking afternoon of presentations and discussion, "Adding Value: Creativity Applied--Laying the foundations for sustainable growth", was held 21 November 2011 at the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh. The conference was a partnership between the Institute for Capitalising on Creativity (ICC) and the RSA Fellows' Media, Creative Industries, Culture and Heritage (MCICH) Network.

BAM2011 Best Paper Awards
Congratulations to the following authors for winning the 2011 Best Paper Awards in their tracks at the British Academy of Management (BAM) 2011 Conference held in Birmingham:

  • Cultural and Creative Industries Full Paper Award: "A dialogical exploration of solo improvisation performance", by Professor Nic Beech, Professor David Sims (City University), Ms Holly Patrick and Dr Gail Greig.
  • Inter-Organisational Relations Developmental Paper Award: "Flex and Reflexivity: leadership in festival networks", by Dr Paul Hibbert, Professor Nic Beech and Dr Charlotte Gilmore.
  • Management and Business History Developmental Paper Award: "Producer Choice at the BBC: strategy, history and politics", by Professor Chris Carter (Newcastle University) and Professor Alan McKinlay.

Meet Us in Your Country: Autumn 2011
Working in association with the British Council and the QS World Grad School Tour, Mrs Julie Brooks, Director of Postgraduate Programmes, School of Management, visited seven countries during October 2011, meeting potential students interested in studying with us at St Andrews.

Management Lecturer Named New Generation Thinker
School of Management Lecturer Dr Philip Roscoe has been named by BBC Radio 3 as one of its 10 New Generation Thinkers, a team of early-career academics who have interesting ideas and flair for exploring them through radio programmes. The New Generation Thinkers feature in a Night Waves series on Radio 3.

From 7 - 9 September 2011, the School of Management welcomed the 2011 Annual International Conference of the Centre for Social and Environmental Accounting Research (CSEAR).

Executive MBA and International Business and Development students from Paris at the School of Management
Sciences Po group August 2011In August 2011 the School of Management welcomed a cohort of 20 Executive MBA and International Business and Development students from Sciences Po, Paris (www.sciences-po.fr) to St Andrews. Their programme for the week focused on the Management of Strategic Change with intensive studies made of current practices and models relating to change management, stakeholder analysis, managing culture and the behavioural implications of scenario planning. The content of this module was delivered by Professor Nic Beech, Professor Huw Davies, and Mr Martin Dowling from the School of Management and Professor Robert MacIntosh from University of Glasgow Business School.
In addition to their academic studies within the School, the delegation had the opportunity to acquaint themselves with St Andrews and to visit Edinburgh. The students learned of the history of Scotch whisky during an evening with Dr David Wishart, Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Management.
This was the third time the School has welcomed a delegation of students from Sciences Po, following highly successful visits in 2009 and 2010. Sciences Po is one of France's most prestigious higher education establishments and the study visit to the School by students and staff from Sciences Po is one of a number of collaborative initiatives currently being pursued by the two institutions.

Calling all Alumni - Management, CBE and GBS!
The School of Management is aiming to improve its alumni services over the coming academic years. We have been investigating different means of communication to improve the way you can stay in contact with us once you have graduated. Thank you to all alumni of the School, the Centre for Business Education and the Graduate Business School who replied to our August 2011 online survey. We'll keep you posted on developments.

ESRC Collaborative Studentships: Creativity
Applications are being accepted until 15 August 2011 for a number of fully funded ESRC Collaborative Studentships with the Institute for Capitalising on Creativity (ICC). The PhD projects will begin in September 2011.

Professor Wins Emerald Award 2011
Emerald, a key publisher of management reseach, is recognising a School of Management professor for the second year in a row. In the Emerald Literati Network 2011 Awards for Excellence, Professor Robert Gray wins a "Highly Commended Award" for "A re-evaluation of social enviromental and sustainability accounting: An exploration of an emerging trans-disciplinary field" in Sustainability Accounting Management and Policy Journal, 2010, Vol.1, pp 11-32.
