Introduction

Michael Franklin is a Research Associate at the Institute for Capitalising on Creativity at the University of St Andrews and at Creative Scotland.

He is a PhD Candidate in the School of Management, University of St Andrews.

Education

Michael holds an MA (Hons) from the University of St Andrews in Philosophy and Modern History (2006), an MSc in Film Theory from the University of Edinburgh (2007) and an MSc (distinction) in Management for Film Business from Cass Business School in the City of London (2008) where he was awarded the Grant Thornton prize for film finance. His research in Internet marketing at Cass is referenced in The International Film Business: A Market Guide Beyond Hollywood (Finney, 2010).

Professional

Previously as part of Northern Alliance (2008-10), Michael has consulted for the UK Film Council, Arts Council England, EM Media, Film London, and the Wales IP Fund as well as on individual film productions. Publicly available reports include: An Analysis of the Corporate Finance of SME’s in the UK Film Industry, as well as Show me the money – a guide to film business finance, and a Review of Short Film in the UK. All are available via the UK Film Council website.

Current Research

Michael's current research focuses on the use of digital marketing and distribution models as means to mitigate risk in the independent film industry.
