Biography

Research interests, Publications summary and Other Information

Kevin Orr is Professor of Management, and Head of School, School of Management, University of St Andrews, UK.

Kevin's research interests are at the intersections of organisational theory, public administration and political studies. His work addresses aspects of managing, leading and organising, most often in local government or other public sector settings. His research adopts an interpretive perspective, contributing to conversations about storytelling and narratives; relational leadership; knowledge and practice; and power and traditions. Kevin's recent ethnographic writing explores organisational ghosts in local government – examining how inheritances of the past haunt the relations and struggles of the present.

His writing appears in journals which include Public Administration Review, Organization Studies, Management Learning, Public Administration, British Journal of Politics and International Relations, and Policy and Politics. He is co-editor of Knowledge and Practice in Business and Organisations, Routledge (2016). He was awarded the 2013 Louis Brownlow Prize by the American Society for Public Administration for his Public Administration Review article on the politics of academic-practitioner knowledge co-production.

His work is connected with international research leadership roles. He is past Chair (2011-2014) of the OLKC research community, and continues to serve on its Executive Board. He is on the Editorial Advisory Board of Management Learning and the International Journal of Public Sector Management. He has been convenor of PhD colloquia at Northwestern University, Boston, USA; ITESM, Mexico; George Washington University, USA; BI Norwegian Business School; and the Universita Cattolica, Italy.
