Biography

José Manuel Liñares-Zegarra received his BA in Economics and PhD in Economics and Business from the University of Granada (Spain). José is a Lecturer in Banking and Finance at University of St Andrews (since June 2012). He joined the School of Management in September 2011 as a visiting scholar. Previously, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Finance at University of Illinois (2010/2011) and a Teaching Fellow at University of Alicante (2009/2010). He has also been a visiting research fellow in the Department of Finance at Florida State University (USA) and the Institute of European Finance (Bangor University, UK).

His academic career combines both teaching and research in economics, banking and finance and empirical industrial organisation applied to banking. He has been researcher for the Spanish Savings Banks Foundation and has also participated in several projects related to the banking industry for the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Andalusian Autonomous Government and several financial institutions. In recent years, José Manuel has been involved in various empirical studies in retail payments, including cash usage, mobile money and the impact of identity theft on measuring consumer payment choice. His research agenda also includes the impact of interchange fee regulation on payment adoption and price structure in two-sided payment card markets. He has published articles in journals including Journal of Banking & Finance, Review of Network Economics, Moneda y Crédito, Papeles de Economía Española, Perspectivas del Sistema Financiero and Cuadernos de Información Económica.

Research Interests

His current research interests include payment economics such as consumer payment behaviour and security issues, topics in banking and finance, corporate finance, corporate governance, microfinance and social capital.
