Closely related to the Photographic Digitisation project is the Visual Evidence Project, an RSLP-funded collaborative programme involving the Universities of St Andrews, Aberdeen and Dundee. Under the management of St Andrews, the project:

  • digitised almost 100,000 images from the photographic collections of the three partners
  • created a brief caption database for all of the images, and a detailed descriptive database for many of them
  • established a website which provides a single gateway to interrogate the image-bases of all three partners.

In collaboration with SCRAN a seamless search facility was also developed, allowing single-search access to all three sites. The joint search engine now provides access to a great many more than simply the RSLP-funded images.

The images for the initiaitive were taken from throughout the Photographic Collections of St Andrews (see the Photographic Collections page), from Dundee University's Peto Collection, and Aberdeen University's George Washington Wilson Collection.

Although the collaborative development project is now complete, the Visual Evidence project website remains available, and the partners will endeavour to maintain it in the future, as far as the compatibility of their local software allows.

St Andrews University Library also participated in an RSLP-funded programme for the digitisation of architectural plans. This 'sister project' to the Visual Evidence, The Drawn Evidence, was managed by Dundee University.
