Book recommendations

All recommendations for book orders are dealt with by the Acquisitions Department of the University Library. Orders are processed in the order in which they are received, but if an item is required urgently, Acquisitions staff will do all they can to expedite this.

How to order a book: academic staff

Many Schools now participate in the Oasis Online Ordering scheme hosted by our supplier Coutts.  This allows you to select the books you want from the Oasis database and forward them to your Library Representative for approval.  Please ask your Library Representative if your School participates in this scheme.  If so, you will require a Coutts username and password in order to search the database.  These are obtainable from Dr Alice Crawford, who will also provide you with some guidance on how to use the system.

If your School does not participate in the Oasis scheme, you should use the Book Recommendation Form below to request items for the Main Library or one of the departmental libraries.

Book Recommendation Form (Word, 25 KB)
  1. Copy and paste this form into an email.
  2. Complete as many details as possible.
  3. If an item is required urgently or for Short Loan once it arrives, please indicate this.
  4. Send your completed email to your School Library Representative, for approval.
  5. Your Library Representative will then forward it to the Acquisitions Department, Main Library.

How to order a book: students

Students wishing to recommend an academic text for purchase, for either the University Library or a departmental library, should complete the Book Recommendation Form above and give it to their lecturer or supervisor. Once this recommendation has been considered by the Library Representative of the relevant department, it will be passed to the Library Acquisitions Department.  Students are also welcome to use the morebooks@st-andrews.ac.uk email address to request books.  You are particularly encouraged to use this email address to request additional copies of books where you think more are required e.g. for a large class working on an essay.  Decisions about whether these books should be purchased will be made by the Academic Liaison Librarians.

General interest material

Recommendations of books of general interest to the University Library should be made either via the Book Recommendation Form above, via the morebooks@st-andrews.ac.uk email address, or via the Contact Us Online Form.  You are also welcome to email the relevant Academic Liaison Librarian direct.
